Sir Elton Hercules John, CBE (nascido Reginald Kenneth Dwight; Londres, 25 de março de 1947) é um premiado cantor, compositore músico britânico.
Juventude
Reginald Kenneth Dwight cresceu em Pinner em uma council house que pertencia a seus avós maternos. Filho de Sheila Eileen (Harris) e Stanley Dwight, foi educado na Pinner Wood Junior School, Reddiford School e mais tarde na Pinner County Grammar School, onde mais tarde iria adquirir uma bolsa de estudos para a Royal Academy of Music.
Quando Elton John começou a se interessar pela carreira musical, seu pai, antigo tenente da RAF, tentou o convencer a seguir uma carreira mais convencional. Os pais de Elton eram ambos músicos. Seu pai tocava trompete em uma banda amadora chamada Bob Millar Band, que animava festas formais.
A família de Elton John era uma exímia colecionadora de álbuns, o que o fez se interessar pelo estilo de Elvis Presley e Bill Haley & His Comets durante a década de 1950.
Interesse pela música
Elton John começou a tocar piano com 3 anos de idade e dentro de 1 ano foi selecionado para o "The Skater's Waltz" de Winifred Atwell. Elton John logo contava com uma rotina agitada de tocar em festas e reuniões de família e começou seus estudos de música aos 7 anos. Elton se tornou um aluno de destaque nas escolas onde estudou música, sendo comparado com Jerry Lee Lewis por seus colegas de classe. Aos 11 anos, Elton John conseguiu uma bolsa de estudos para a Royal Academy of Music, até hoje uma das instituições musicais mais respeitadas do Reino Unido.
A mãe de Elton John, Sheila, embora fosse mais rigorosa com ele, era também mais carinhosa e dedicada do que o pai, Stanley. Stanley Dwight é decrito por Elton como um pai desnaturado e grosseiro, que já o agrediu verbalmente várias vezes. Quando Elton tinha 15 anos de idade seus pais se divorciaram e sua mãe foi viver com um pintor local chamado Fred Farebrother. Fred se tornou um padrasto carinhoso para Elton John e assumiu o lugar de figura paterna que seu pai biológico nunca assumiu.
Início
Seu nome artístico advém de dois integrantes de sua antiga banda, Bluesology - Elton Dean (saxofonista) e Long John Baldry (líder da banda).
Estudou na Pinner County Grammar School e ganhou uma bolsa escolar aos onze anos de idade para a Royal Academy of Music.
A carreira de Elton John atravessa a quarta década de ininterrupto sucesso. Nos anos setenta, época que muitos consideram como sendo o auge de sua carreira (foi considerado o segundo artista mais importante dessa década, superado apenas por Paul McCartney), já podia ser considerado como um dos maiores astros de rock do planeta.
Ainda na adolescência, integrou o grupo de blues Bluesology. Em 1967 estabeleceu parceria com o letrista Bernie Taupin, com o qual lançou grande parte de sua obra musical, mantendo-se a parceria até os dias de hoje.
Apesar de ter lançado o disco Empty Sky em 1969, que não trazia em seu repertório algum imediato sucesso , a guinada de sua carreira ocorreu com o lançamento do disco Elton John, de 1970, que o lançou como cantor de sucesso nos Estados Unidos e trouxe ao público um de seus maiores sucessos, a canção "Your Song".
Dentre seus discos de maior sucesso, destacam-se Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973) e Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975). São também os seus discos mais bem colocados no ranking de melhores discos do século XX elaborado pela revista Rolling Stone.
Elton John compôs sua canção crocodile rock na França juntamente com Bernie Taupin no estúdio honkey cateâu.
Além de Bernie Taupin, outros letristas trabalharam com Elton, entre os quais Gary Osborne e Tim Rice. Enquanto a parceria com o primeiro está presente nos discos A Single Man, 21 at 33, The Fox, Jump Up! e Leather Jackets, o trabalho com o segundo, iniciada com a músicaLegal Boys, de 1982, resultou anos depois na soundtrack dos filmes O Rei Leão (1994), com a qual Elton ganhou o Oscar de melhor trilha sonora, e O Caminho Para Eldorado (2001).
É o único artista que até hoje conseguiu obter seis lançamentos consecutivos no primeiro lugar da Billboard, sendo detentor, ademais, do recorde de single de maior vendagem da história, com a adaptação feita em 1997 da canção Candle in the Wind em homenagem à amiga pessoal, Princesa Diana, totalizando um total de quarenta milhões de cópias vendidas.
Elton John manteve-se em evidência na década de 1980, época em que lançou um álbum inédito por ano, levando ao público hits como I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues, I'm Still Standing, Sacrifice, Nikita e diversos outros. Apesar de ter declarado sua bissexualidade em 1976, em entrevista à revista Rolling Stone, casou-se com a engenheira de som Renate Blauel em 1984, tendo a união se dissolvido em 1988. Em 2005 celebrou contrato de parceria civil com David Furnish, com o qual vive desde meados da década de 1990. No Natal de 2010 nasceu Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, gestado por uma mãe de aluguel e filho biológico de um deles.
Embora tenha diminuído o ritmo de lançamento de novos discos, Elton John permaneceu em evidência na década de 1990, lançando canções de sucesso como Can You Feel The Love Tonight, The One, Something About The Way You Look Tonight, Blessed. É considerado um dos maiores e mais influentes artistas da atualidade, lançando novos trabalhos regularmente. Nos últimos anos compôs os musicais Billy Eliot eLestat, que ficaram em cartaz na Broadway.
Curiosidades;
É filantropo: participou do Live Aid de 1985, ao lado de artistas como David Bowie, Sting, Phil Collins, entre outros, além de manter uma fundação para combate da Aids, tida como a maior do mundo no gênero, criada em 1992.No mesmo ano,se apresentou junto com o Guns N' Roses no Video Music Awards 92.
Elton sempre teve o sonho de ser dono de um clube de futebol pelo qual torcia, o Watford FC, tendo realizado esse projeto em 1976, quando então o clube figurava na série B da Liga Inglesa. Injetou recursos para contratações, levando o clube até a primeira divisão. Vendeu-o em 1987. Também ajuda um clube de futebol da Austrália. É dono de um restaurante em Hollywood.
Em 1986, foi sujeito a uma intervenção cirúrgica na garganta, em virtude de lhe ter sido diagnosticado pequenos nódulos nas suas cordas vocais, consequência da quantidade demarijuana que fumava nessa altura. Este facto veio a impor uma mudança profunda na sua voz, que se tornou mais grave e profunda, perdendo por completo o seu famoso falsete.
Em 1992, Elton cantou com o Queen a música "The Show Must Go On" no Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Ele cantou neste mesmo concerto, em homenagem a Freddie Mercury, a música Bohemian Rhapsody, junto com Axl Rose e os integrantes restantes do Queen.
Em 2007, Elton John comemorou o seu aniversário de 60 anos realizando o seu sexagésimo show no Madison Square Garden, em Nova York. O discurso de abertura do espetáculo foi feito pelo ex-presidente dos Estados Unidos da América, Bill Clinton.
Em 2008, Elton John foi escolhido pela Billboard como o cantor solo de maior sucesso da história.
Em Portugal
Elton John esteve pela primeira vez em Portugal em 1971 no Festival de Vilar de Mouros.
Em 16 de Julho de 1992 atuou no Estádio de Alvalade e em 13 de Setembro de 2000, teve um concerto marcado no Casino Estoril que foi cancelado. Posteriormente queixou-se do fumo no salão preto e prata do casino..
Actuou novamente a 28 de Junho de 2009 no Pavilhão Atlântico.

No Brasil
A primeira vez que Elton esteve no Brasil foi no ano de 1978, para passar o carnaval, junto com os amigos Rod Stewart e Peter Frampton. Não houve espetáculos durante a sua estadia.
A segunda vez que Elton se apresentou no Brasil foi durante a turnê do álbum Made In England, em 1995, ocasião em que se apresentou tanto em São Paulo (23 de novembro no Estádio Olímpico do Ibirapuera) quanto no Rio de Janeiro (25 de novembro, no Estádio do Flamengo. Sua vinda em 1992, pela turnê do álbum The One, foi cancelada após a abertura das vendas dos ingressos.
Em Fevereiro de 2007 chegou a ter um show grátis confirmado, que aconteceria na Praia de Copacabana, e seria nos mesmos moldes do show dos Rolling Stones de 2006. Porém, depois de diversas informações desencontradas e o adiamento, por fim o show acabou cancelado. Especulações levam a creer que houve desistência de patrocinadores.
Em janeiro de 2009 ele retornou ao Brasil, com o show baseado em sua turnê "Rocket Man", de 2007, e passou pelas cidades de São Paulo (Arena Skol Anhembi), no dia 17/01 (exibido ao vivo pela Rede Globo e pelo canal por assinatura Multishow), e Rio de Janeiro (Praça da Apoteose), no dia 19/01. Quem fez a abertura dos shows foi o também cantor pop britânico James Blunt. No dia 15 de janeiro houve um show particular para o patrocinador, o Banco Cruzeiro do Sul, e seus convidados na Sala São Paulo, na capital paulista, com lotação limitada a mil pessoas.
